When purchasing a Maine Coon you should check to make sure the breeder you are purchasing from is registered with a quality association such as The Cat Fanciers Association, The International Cat Association or The World Cat Federation. Ask for the cattery registration number and registered name and phone the association to verify your breeder.
All quality catteries will and should do genetic testing before breeding. Ask to see the results of the parents testing to insure your cat is clear of any genetic diseases. If the cats were tested properly a health gurantee should be given to the buyer. These tests should cover HCM, PKD, SMA, and Hip Dysplasia to the result of -/-.
Verify the business or cattery you are purchasing from. These steps would include a website disclosing all information including phone contacts and emails. Social media pages to match. A verified google business listing. Check all avenues. Install google lens on your phone, upload any suspicious photo's you are looking at and see where it originates. A little detective work can go a long way.. Do not send deposits on cats you have not seen in person unless the seller is proven.
